Primavera Sound
Primavera Sound headliners Portishead
In Spanish, Primavera means 'Spring'.

This is surely one of the one nicest ways to welcome the end of spring and the start of summer. Forget your British mud baths, 2008 is officially the year of the foreign festivals.

You thought potential Glasto punters were put off by Jay-Z? Wrong. They were put off by the interminable Somerset mud at the festival of death and despair.
Why pay to spend a weekend sobbing silently to yourself under sopping wet canvas in the cold, when you can guarantee yourself an amazing weekend of sun and music in Spain's most kicking metropolis?

Following our Spanish sojourns in 2007 to Benicassim and Summercase, musicOMH will be in the Catalan capital fuelled on tapas and tinto to bring you the best bits.

If you're in any doubt about whether to fork out on the airfare, do it. This one will be worth it. Why? Well, headliners include Portishead, Rufus Wainwright, The Cribs and De La Soul. If it's art-rock you're after then look no further than Les Savy Fav, A Place To Bury Strangers, Mission Of Burma and Shellac. There's old school post-punk from Devo, the bluesy noodling of MGMT and veterans Dinosaur Jr too.

ATP have had a hand in the programming, and their skinny white fingerprints are all over the bill, in the shape of Devastations, Silver Jews and The Sonics. There's hot up-and-comers on like Vampire Weekend, Times New Viking and HEALTH.

And as it's 2008 there's the weird band names ranging from the inane to the profane too. We give you: Fuck Buttons, Fanfarlo, Pissed Jeans, and of course alt.hopper. Why? Exactly.

Rumours abound of free beer again this year (the festival is sponsored by Estrella Damm), and if you get bored you can go and check out an unparalleled selection of modern architecture, open spaces, beaches and bars in Spain's throbbing cultural epicentre. In fact if you spend all weekend at the festival you'll be missing out.

Still want to schlep down to a piss-streaked, windswept valley of hell in Somerset? Go ahead, there'll be more room at Primavera for the rest of us. Hasta luego, amigos.

FIVE ACTS TO MISS AT YOUR PERIL:

1. Portishead
Third must have been the most anticipated album of the year, and thus far the Bristol trio have played only a handful of shows in support of it.

2. Simian Mobile Disco
Super-producer James Ford, behind the Arctic Monkeys, Klaxons and The Last Shadow Puppets, resorts to his day job. Amid the knob-twiddling, watch the place bounce.

3. Devo
Post punk of the old school sort.

4. Les Savy Fav
Like Portishead, this lot don't play much but when they do, rave reviews follow.

5. Enon
So under-rated, their 2000 record Believo! was re-released in 2007. Catch them this time round.

- Chris Beanland, 5/2008

Primavera Sound takes place on 29th, 30th and 31st May 2008 at Parc del Fórum, Barcelona. Three-day tickets cost 140 euros and are available from See Tickets.
